What is The Construction Institute?
TCI was founded as the Labor-Management Construction Safety Alliance (CSA), a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization incorporated in Massachusetts in 1998. CSA was dedicated to promoting safety and health and improving employer competitiveness in the construction industry in Massachusetts and surrounding New England states. The name was changed in 2005 to The Construction Institute in recognition of the expansion of the mission of the organization to strengthen the fabric of the union construction sector in Massachusetts through the development and dissemination of information which will positively affect the future of the union construction industry and its service to the consuming public.
TCI is unique among other labor-management organizations in Massachusetts as it is a multi-trade organization representing all of the 15 building trades. TCI's member organizations represent 75,000 union construction workers and 3,000 union contractors in Massachusetts.
What Does TCI Do?
TCI will focus on strengthening union construction for the benefit of union workers and employers, as well as the consuming public; and on safeguarding the lives and health of union construction workers, through three main programs:
- Research
Research has shown that there is an overall lack of high quality quantitative research both on the impact of unionization in construction, and on factors which could positively affect the future of union construction.
TCI will fund research projects to address these gaps in research at the finest institutions of higher education and other research institutions throughout the country. TCI will publish and disseminate research findings to the construction industry, its consumers, and policy makers.
- Communication
TCI will implement a communication program to make a compelling business case to owners and users as to why union contractors and labor should be the unanimous choice for construction projects. TCI is uniquely positioned to support its message by scholarly research and to speak as a unified voice for all of the building trades.
- Workplace Safety & Health Education and Outreach
During its 7 year history, the Labor-Management Construction Safety Alliance was dedicated to improving safety and health in our industry through the development of educational curricula and the delivery of workplace safety and health educational programs to over 5,000 workers and employers. TCI will continue this vital work to reduce workplace hazards and injuries in the union construction sector through these and other efforts.
